FOREWORD

The information contained in this web site is similar and many cases the same as was recorded in my original book, "History of Lewis County TN." originally written and published in 1976.  The book was a result of thirteen years collection of information and photos of people, places and events in Lewis County and Hohenwald in particular.

It was my desire to publish another, up-to-date volume at a later date and I did have 12 copies printed but the cost was so prohibitive that I dropped the idea and began to concentrate on a revised web site.  It also was my desire to list all contributors of articles and photos but lost track of some of the information and decided it would not be wise to list some and leave others out.

I do wish to thank everyone who has and hopefully will contribute to this web site.  It is my desire to include as many family names and their histories as possible. Mostly what I need now are church histories and biographical sketches.  You can help.

It became evident that there was nothing available to begin with, so  I ran an ad in the Lewis County Herald announcing a meeting to help organize a historical society.  The first meeting at the Lewis County Library in March 1975 was attended by these few and possibly others that I may be forgetting:  (top row L to R) Commodore Spann, Dr. Roger Bouldin (first president), Marjorie Graves, Ezra Higgins, Harold Sublett,(owner of this site) (bottom row L to R) John Stanley, Betty Grimes, Shirley Mayberry, Herbert Crostwait and Mable Frese.

As of this date, December 20,  2007 I am still collecting information and photos to complete the web page that will be helpful to all who have a thirst for local history. This revision includes expanded histories, church buildings and church histories when available, a photo section, and additional articles.

The Lewis County Library reference room is an ideal and comfortable place to do local and family research.  The library staff is eager to help you.  The Lewis County Museum is open on a regular basis with expansion plans to include local memorabilia.  Currently, there is an effort to establish an archive and unless this happens, local history will remain fragmented and in the hands of private collectors who jealously and understandably  guard their collections.

Thanks for visiting our Web site devoted to a better knowledge of the history of Hohenwald and Lewis County, TN.  It is my hope that you will enjoy it.  Send me an email with any corrections you feel should be made and with Biographical sketches of your family.  Comments, suggestions, or offers of additional photos and historical information will be appreciated.  We reserve the right to accept or reject any or all submissions.

This Web site is provided free of charge by High Forest Net Solutions as a public service to Lewis County in cooperation with Harold Sublett editor and owner of the site. High Forest Net Solutions offers local Internet access and Web hosting services. Please call 931-796-7400 or email to: sales@hifo.net .  A 50+ minute DVD slide show containing 242 slides is complete and available for purchase.  If enough additional historical photos are received, a second show may be constructed.  For information on how to purchase the DVD  please click here.

This web site is dedicated to all who practice the Golden Rule.  The Golden Rule or the ethic of reciprocity is found in the scriptures of nearly every religion. It is often regarded as the most concise and general principle of ethics. It is a condensation in one principle of all longer lists of ordinances such as the Decalogue.   "Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets."  Matthew 7:12
