THE HOHENWALD CHURCH OF CHRIST
The Hohenwald
Church of Christ had its beginning in a small church building belonging
to the Presbyterians and located on Swan Avenue.
Its membership was composed of Brother R. C. Brown and wife,
and Brother Joe Overby and his wife. They were
joined a little later by Dr. J. F. Whitwell and family and by Brother
Tom J. Bastin and his family. In a short time they decided to
erect a building of their own. This building was completed in
1897.
In 1909 the old building was torn down and a much larger frame building
was erected which was until March 1927. It was
struck by
lightening and destroyed. The building committee, composed of
T.
E. Poore, W. H. Loveless, B. M. Grimes, J. L. O'Guin and C. P. Hull,
secured the blue print of the Trinity Lane Church in Nashville which
was called in the erection of the
building.
The congregation moved into the new structure on the 9th day of October
1927, at which time brother I. A. Douthitt started a week's meeting.
B. M. Grimes led the singing, the first song being, "Leaning
on the Everlasting Arms." Many changes have been made in the
building since that time. An adjacent lot was purchased and
converted into a large parking area. In 1968 a new
home for the preacher was constructed.
The first regular minister serving the church was J. W. Dunn.
Since then the church has been served by J. B. Rasbury, I.
A. Douthitt, J. J. Lancaster, B. B. James, Joe Cook VanDyke,
Riley Moore, James Faulkner, Charles Balcom and Roy Arnold.
