HOHENWALD CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
The
Hohenwald Cumberland Presbyterian Church was organized in 1904 by B. J.
Reagan, the first pastor. Its roots, however, go
farther
into the past to 1866, in the New Providence Cumberland Presbyterian
Church which was located at Riverside.
Among the early members of the Hohenwald Church, most of whom came from
the New Providence Church, were Voorhies, Churchwells,
Fites,Rochelles, and Flanigans, many of whose descendants are active in
the church today as were their forbears in the past.
Other names found in the early records are Stockard, Dobbins,
Watkins, Petway, and George.
Originally the church was a two-story frame building located on the
present site, the second story of which was used by the
Masonic and Woodmen of the World Lodges. In 1933, the church
had its first resident pastor, the Rev. J. H. McLemore during whose
ministry the present brick sanctuary was fashioned from the
old frame building. Ralph Matlock became the first full-time
pastor in 1952. Under his leadership and educational annex
was added and other improvements made.
Under the ministry of subsequent pastors, the church has continued to
improve and beautify its physical plant and to grow in
membership contributing its influence of Christian living
together with that of the other churches in the community.
