Getzsinger, Mrs. Nance is postmistress at Newburg; also principal of the school and the bookkeeper for the merchants there. (Columbia Herald, 24 Oct., 1871) Kimmins, a new post office at the end of the N and T Railroad in Lewis county; it is maiden name of Mrs. grace Cunningham, mother of the merchant at Kimmins. (Hickman Pioneer, 1 June 1888) Lindsey, David, superintendent of Sunday School at Palestine. He, his wife, and seven children are all red headed. (Col. Herald, 2 May 1873) Bland, James, discovered a silver mine on Indian Creek, three miles west of Palestine in Lewis County...it is said he beat up his wife's Britannia spoons and scattered fragments on hillsides in order to advertise his land..He formerly lived in Maury. (Col. Herald, 22 March 1872) Grimes, Samuel, of Lewis County, fought Indians and killed buffaloes in new Mexico during the Civil War. (Col. Herald, 31 May 1872) Johnston, R. S. and J. S. Westbrook reported they have discovered an oil spring on Big Swan in Lewis County. (Col. Herald, 12 July 1872) Freshet in Lewis County has been worse than the one in May 1856. Big Swan and Indian Creek are up. Cane Creek is higher than ever known. (Col. Herald, 26 April 1872) From Lewis County Herald - 1933 B. C. Baker, well-known Centerville trader in livestock, bought three nice mules here Wednesday, paying fancy prices for them. Mrs. F. A. Goodman and daughter, Melba, and Miss Alice Plummer spent last Saturday in Nashville, guests of Dr. and Mrs. Vogelpohn. Ladies pure white fleeced drawers, sizes 32-44, sold for $1 before. you can buy them any size Saturday for $.25. Drop seat Union suits, price $.55. you can buy them today for $.39. In accordance with the provisions of the act of May 6, 1861, an election was held throughout the State June 8, for the people to decide upon the question of secession or separation, and the question of representation in the Confederate States Congress, and the adoption of the provisional constitution of the confederate government. Lewis County Separation - 223, No separation - 14, Representation - 216, No representation - 17. CIVIL WAR REGIMENTAL SKETCH The frothy-eighth Tennessee (Confederate, Voorhies) regiment was raised in Maury, Hickman and Lewis Counties, and was organized in December, 1861, with W. M. Voorhies, colonel. It moved to Clarksville, thence to Danville, thence to Fort Henry, and after the evacuation there, to fort Donelson, where, after fighting in that historical action, it surrendered. after about six months, it was exchanged at Vicksburg, was reorganized at Jackson with Voorhies again Colonel. A portion of the regiment, on details, in hospitals and on furlough, had escaped the capture at Fort Donelson, and with five companies from Wayne and Lawrence counties, had served under Col. Nixon until December, 12862, when the old regiment was reunited the portion that had been captured having been incorporated with the third from the exchange in August until the reunion. LEWIS COUNTY HERALD 1920 Main Street has the side walk fever these days and it looks as if we will at last get some real walks in this part of town. W. M. Stephens is having his property on the corner of Helvetia and third streets paved. If the whole town should become afflicted with this melody, we would soon have a much nicer city. Comrad of Fred Lomax writes concerning his service and death - Lomax was the first from Lewis county to die in world War 1. We are unfortunate in having a town without police authority. We have no power to enforce any ordinance except for street work and health preservation. We need some way or means of keeping teams from being fed on the side walks. Most any day you can see any number of teams being fed on the walks or where the walks should be and the public crossing through the water and mud to get around town. Children cry for Fletcher's Castoria. J. Walter Peeler - Barber and Undertaker - Hair Cuts $.25 Livery Stables were an important business as they provided horses and equipment for traveling salesmen (drummers) with goods out of Nashville, etc. Much of Hohenwald burned about 1926-27 (the north side of main street). Plummer was advertising that parties wishing teeth extracted or filled or any other work in Dentistry would call and see him on Saturdays at William's Drug Store. You could board at J. Marbet's boarding house by the day or week and get first class meals at lowest prices. Or if you didn't like it there, you could go over to the William's house, where transient guests were shown special attention. NEWBURG CENSUS June 20, 1870 Dwellings - 10, Families - 10, White males - 17, White Females - 23 1886 CENSUS OF LEWIS COUNTY Hohenwald has two stores and a post office, Napier Furnace has one store and a post office, Voorhies has one store and a post office, Nutt has two stores and a post office, Carpenters Station has one store, saw mill and a barrel factory, Palestine, six miles northeast of Newburg in 1860, had a post office, store, grocery , school, church and twelve dwellings, fifty inhabitants. HOHENWALD HERALD - 1907...Wanted: 500 small mules - 13-3/4 to 14-3/4 hands high. HOHENWALD CHRONICLE - 1901 N. W. Black - Editor and Publisher Band mill running full time, H. W. Brennon, contractor, is pushing the building of two and one-half miles of railroad for the Buffalo Iron Works from here to their ore banks where a new washer is to be built at once.
